This week in Guns & Patriots...
Neil W. McCabe, Editor

Dear Guns & Patriots readers,

There are gun laws in America, and many of them are unconstitutional. Of those unconstitutional ones few are as criminally enforced as the tourist trap at New York City's LaGuardia airport.

California Tea Party leader Mark Meckler was caught in the trap Dec. 15, when he approached Port Authority police about his handgun before flying; his simple and responsible conversation landed him in jail for 12 hours. Then throw into the mix the wall-to-wall publicity that reinforced the mass media narrative that Tea Partiers are crazed gun nuts.

Charged with illegal possession of a firearm, Meckler joined more than 700 other tourists arrested in NYC in the last year, who were also allowed to plead down to a misdemeanor and a fine. Plead down? Why yes, they all plead down because judges refuse to allow the felony charges to go to trial. Our new contributor Kimberly Dvorak spoke to Meckler and his lawyer about the whole sorted mess.

Another new contributor J.D. Butz shares with us his dream vacation: an 11-day safari in Nambia. Butz is a true big game hunter, whose story reminds us that real hunters love nature, and are a part of nature. Enjoy, too, the slideshow.

In tribute to the hunting side of the house, our Go button this week is the website for Hunters Against PETA and our video is from Cork Graham's Outdoors, where Cork roasts saddle of cottontail rabbit.

This week, we also welcome back Emily Miller's journey to full gun citizenship in the District of Columbia with another installment of the "Emily gets her gun" series.

There is more, but the more I talk about it, the longer it will keep you from digging in, so: Dig in!

Enjoy,

It's an unwritten law of modern America that a political campaign speech should last no more than 30 minutes. The lecture candidate Barack Obama delivered on the evening of Jan. 24 in the House chamber of the U.S. Capitol came in at just longer than one hour and six minutes. It was full of rhetoric we should expect to hear reiterated from now until Nov. 6. The president's supporters declared his economic message to be "populist." That's liberal-speak for class warfare... Excerpt: Faced with incredible enemy resistance, Corporal Stowers took charge, setting such a courageous example of personal bravery and leadership that he inspired his men to follow him in the attack. With extraordinary heroism and complete disregard of personal danger under devastating fire, he crawled forward leading his squad toward an enemy machine gun nest, which was causing heavy casualties to his company... Excerpt: Should one be in native mufti, the sheath would be tucked into the patuka or sash just left of center, at roughly a thirty-degree angle, edge down. An additional option, one may consider an expedient cross-shoulder strap setup or, for concealed carry, a shoulder rig. The latter usually corresponding with the somewhat smaller Khukuri variations... Read More

Excerpt: But I vividly recall the day a police officer showed up at the range with an honest-to-God .458 Winchester Magnum rifle and a couple of boxes of ammo. That event took place in my younger and more foolish days, when I would take a dare to "shoot anything." Even a badly stocked .458 that would almost permanently relocate your cheek bone. If my memory serves me correctly, I made it up to about ten rounds from the .458, but I had no desire to try for 20... Read More

Their latest move is a proposed law being circulated and discussed in Forsyth County, N.C., which would make firearms illegal to carry in local parks. Supporting the measure, the editorial pages of the Winston-Salem Journal make an argument that county officials should "curb, not promote, guns in parks," because visitors will not feel safe and will be discouraged from visiting... Excerpt: The startling accession in the federalization of natural disasters began in 1993, under the direction of the Clinton administration and with the appointment of James Lee Witt as FEMA's administrator. Clinton broke the 1977 record of 61 declarations with 158 declarations in his reelection year. In contrast, Obama issued 108 declarations in 2009 and another 108 in 2010. In 2011 he issued 243 declarations... Read More

The framers of the existing Confederation, fully aware of the danger to the Union from the separate possession of military forces by the States, have, in express terms, prohibited them from having either ships or troops, unless with the consent of Congress. The truth is, that the existence of a federal government and military establishments under State authority are not less at variance with each other than a due supply of the federal treasury and the system of quotas and requisitions...
