Africa: Regional Tensions Complicate Hunt for Joseph Kony
Regional bickering combined with lack of resolve continue to hamper the ability of central African nations to eliminate the notorious Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and apprehend its leader Joseph Kony. Despite receiving U.S. assistance to combat the LRA last year, the African countries where Kony operates have had little success against the group. While a high profile YouTube video heightened international awareness of the atrocities of the LRA, it so far has not translated into a coherent effort to fight the elusive and mobile rebel group.

Serbia/EU: Serbia’s EU Candidacy Hinges on Kosovo Relations
Serbia scored an important diplomatic victory on March 1 when it finally won candidate status to join the European Union (EU). Serbia has been seeking EU membership for the past several years and has had to overcome numerous obstacles, including Russian opposition and concerns over the situation in its former province of Kosovo. While Serbia’s last minute concessions on Kosovo allowed its EU candidacy to proceed, Serbia’s difficult relations with Kosovo still overshadow its EU bid.
