Team Madison-

As you will see in today's Madisonian, Issue #6, I need you to take action.

All last summer we fought against HR 1380, the NAT GAS Act, a $10 billion subsidy that Texas billionaire, T. Boone Pickens, petitioned his friends in Congress to pass. Here's the problem with this approach-the American taxpayers should not be footing the upfront cost and risk to shift components of our industry and infrastructure (trucking among them) to natural gas so that private individuals like T. Boone Pickens and George Soros can personally profit from it. Both men are heavily invested in the natural gas industry and stand to earn millions of dollars apiece. You and me? Nothing.

T. Boone Pickens has been running around saying we will earn something by ending our dependence on foreign oil. I happen to agree with Pickens that we need to end our dependence on foreign oil, but doing it in the form of $10 billion worth of subsidies is not the path to take. If the market demands this transition, auto and truck makers would already heading in that direction. They are not, which tells me this is an artifical demand that Pickens hopes Washington, DC creates by picking winners and losers in the free market.

If there is one bill that highlights what is wrong with Washington, DC, this is that bill.

Unfortunately, after beating it back in the House, T. Boone Pickens went to his friends in the Senate and wouldn't you know, the NAT GAS Act has been inserted into the Senate's version of the Highway Bill as Amendment #1782. The vote on the Senate Highway Bill takes place tomorrow.

Can you do me a favor right now? Can you pick up the phone and call your Senators and tell them to vote "No" on Amendment #1782 to the Senate Highway Bill? This is important. We have to end the way Washington, DC does business.

As always, here is the Best of Daniel Horowitz.

  1. Many Republicans – and even some conservatives – talk a good game about not using government to pick winners and loser, but when it comes to trade policy there are too few who are willing to let the markets work. Please read more here
  2. After Super Tuesday, we appear to be headed towards a path of gridlock in the presidential election.  This is actually good news for those of us who are hoping for a brokered convention.  We have a full roundup from last week’s big elections.  Please read more here
  3. While everyone is focused on the presidential election this week in Alabama and Mississippi between ‘the evils of three lessers,’ we are focused on the congressional elections.  We have an opportunity to take out two incumbent Republicans who vote with Boehner and replace them with conservatives.  Please read more here
  4. Do you want to know just how out of touch the United States Senate is with the rest of the nation?  In one day of voting, the Senate struck down attempts to expand drilling, cut duplicative programs, approve the Keystone pipeline, repeal job killing EPA regulations, and keep spending in line with the modest budget caps agreed upon last year.  Please read more here.
