New Straw Poll Leader: Rick Santorum The Newest Anti-Romney Takes the Lead In 13 months of polling Rick Santorum has never won a Townhall/HotAir Straw Poll. That all changed this month with an impressive victory for the former Pennsylvania Senator. With a ten point cushion Santorum won with 35.6% of the vote. Newt Gingrich lost more points than Rick Santorum gained, dropping to 2nd place with 25.3%. He had won the previous three straw polls. It looks like Gingrich has not been able to capitalize off of his impressive primary victory in South Carolina. Mitt Romney may be winning a number of nominating contests but he continues to have a moderate level of support in this poll, coming in third with 18.5%. Judging by the conservative audience that votes in this straw poll, it seems obvious that our readers are not sold on a potential Romney nomination. He has never won a Townhall/HotAir Straw Poll. Ron Paul's support clearly has been influenced by his lack of success in the GOP nominating contests. He has never finished lower than third until this month.
