With Obama’s Pacific Pivot, China Scrambles for Strong Response
Caught off guard by President Obama’s late-2011 pivot to the Pacific, China has responded with another large increase in official defense spending. This year’s 11.2 percent increase comes on the heels of President Obama’s recent shift of US foreign policy away from the Middle East and towards China’s desired sphere of influence in the Pacific, a move that has prompted consternation from Chinese officials. While China has been increasing its defense budget for some time, there is little doubt the new pivot to the Pacific by the United States will be the subject of intense debates inside China’s People’s Liberation Army.
