Mathew Staver, Chairman If there was ever a question on just how devastating ObamaCare will be to our personal liberties once it is fully implemented, the recently announced contraceptive and abortifacient mandate settles the issue! From its inception, ObamaCare has contained provisions that mount a direct attack on the moral and religious beliefs of our nation. Now it is proving to be an unprecedented assault on our personal liberties. On the judicial front, Liberty Counsel today filed two major amicus briefs at the United States Supreme Court as part of a multi-year battle against ObamaCare in our nation’s courts. Oral argument is set to begin late next month. On the legislative front, Liberty Counsel Action (LCA) is calling on 100,000 Americans to support Senator Marco Rubio’s “Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 2012,” which will counter the President’s outrageous new mandates. Please read my extremely urgent message below – Mat. Jack, Today, Liberty Counsel filed two major briefs at the nation’s High Court. The first brief argues that the Anti-Injunction Act does not apply and thus the Court should reach the merits of the case. The second brief argues that Congress lacks the authority to mandate that every law-abiding citizen purchase the government-defined health insurance. ++Recent edicts intensify ObamaCare’s devastating impact. The blatant disregard for religious liberty evidenced by the directive that religious organizations and their insurance carriers provide contraceptives and abortifacients illustrates the unavoidable constitutional problem with ObamaCare. I cannot emphasize strongly enough how important it is that Americans understand that the current ObamaCare mandate battle is much larger than just a contraceptive or abortion issue. Here is the core problem: President Obama and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius are telling religious organizations and people of faith that we must violate our religious convictions and core beliefs in order to adhere to the latest ObamaCare mandate. This is a blatant violation of our First Amendment rights! President Obama’s view of the government’s role in our healthcare decision making is truly frightening. He actually thinks his abortion agenda trumps every American’s inalienable right to religious liberty! On its face, ObamaCare is a dangerous federal government incursion into personal rights. If allowed to stand, our religious liberty and freedom of conscience will be subject to the whims of federal bureaucrats. Whatever the President may think, this is precisely the type of tyranny that our founding fathers fought and died to prevent! This is as blatant a violation of the First Amendment’s guarantee to religious “free exercise” as we’ve ever seen. My friend, Matt Barber, wrote: ”America: This arrogant, narcissistic, amoral man thinks you’re stupid. Who do you think pays for the insurance policies that provide ‘free’ birth control, sterilizations, and abortifacients to employees? Why, the very religious organizations doctrinally prohibited from paying for these ‘services’ in the first place, of course.” Edwin Meese, who served as Attorney General under President Ronald Reagan, weighed in by saying that patriotic groups have an obligation to stop Obama’s mandate… “This is an example of one of the greatest attempts at the shredding of the Constitution in our history… The members of Congress have a duty, and all citizens and patriotic groups have an obligation, to do everything in their power to stop this assault on the Constitution…” Best-selling author and radio talk show host, Mark Levin, said that Obama’s mandate is evidence that the nation is in a constitutional crisis… “Twenty-five Notre Dame faculty members – led by the university’s top ethics expert, and including some of the school’s most eminent scholars – have signed a statement declaring that President Barack Obama’s latest version… is a grave violation of religious freedom and cannot stand.” Richard Land, President of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, made a forceful appeal for Baptists to resist the regulation… “In my opinion, a Baptist needs to take a stand on this issue… Our Baptist forefathers went to prison and died for the freedoms that we have, and now it's our responsibility in the providence of God to defend these freedoms lest they be taken away by government fiat.” As we have been stating, the over-reaching and inappropriate severity of the President’s policy impacts EVERY believer in the nation and delivers a stark and chilling message: Your religious freedom and conscience protections are not as important as our statist initiatives and bureaucracies.
