Lawsuit Alleges Churches Singled Out for Unfair Treatment
The mayor of a small Mississippi town appears to be discriminating against churches, which has resulted in legal action.
Liberty Institute has filed a federal lawsuit against Holly Springs, Mississippi, for blocking the use of a building on town square by Opulent Life Church and its Pastor Telsa DeBerry.
Jeff Mateer, an Institute attorney, explains: “They’ve got an ordinance that makes the church seek approval from 60-percent of the landowners in the downtown area — and then even if they obtain that approval, the mayor and the board of advisers have to approve it.” The mayor, who is Pastor DeBerry’s uncle, has reportedly refused to disclose to the pastor a complete copy of the applicable zoning ordinance.

Other than having a right to decide about whether they can or cannot build there, is there a specific reason not to allow the church to be built. It seems that there is much discrimination against Christians but I trust there are sensible reason not to allow the church to be built, even though I can not imagine unless there is not enough parking room and it will interfere with other people's property. Of course I do not know about much about legal reasons that may interfere other than parking interference.
I did not read anything about "building" a church, the article was about religious discriminationagainst The "use of a building" by a church vs some other entity and the mayor not giving information needed to the church, { this is required as part of his responsibility's}.
They say the restriction applies to all buildings of religious worship, but I'd like to see them say no to building a mosque.
Of course with a mosque they would threaten to bomb the town if they did not get their way. I would like to see all the material some thing here seems to be missing
It's not "obstructionism" - it's the American people with a totally different view of where America should be headed, and totally different goals for our country. I have trouble deciding whether our country really is split down the middle between "progressive-liberals" and "conservatives", or whether our country is mostly normal, everyday, fairly conservative people who have been taken over by a minority of well-funded liberals who don't have near enough to do. While they are NOT working at a 9-5 job, NOT making a marriage work, NOT raising decent children, NOT attending church, NOT volunteering in their community, and NOT helping their neighbors, they are apparently sitting around thinking up ways to tell the rest of us what to do and how to do it, in such a way that makes them the most money. It's not obstructionism on steroids, Harry, it's liberal greed. Follow the money.
Gosh, can't Pastor DeBerry read? There should be a copy of the City Charter with all amendments, zoning regulations etc.at the Public Library. If she can't understand the language, I'm sure the city attorney will be glad to explain it to her.
I don't know of many Public Libraries that have the documents that you refer to. They would be on file with the Clerk of Court and/or the Building and Permits Office in City Hall. If however, they refuse to make them available to someone to look at, then the ability to read has nothing to do with this story. That's taking a pretty cheap shot at the Pastor, Gary.
As Thomas Jefferson said,
“When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.”
Hear ye, Hear ye, Hear ye.
To use the quote “ Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their Country”, State, City and neighborhood should be added. In order to form a more perfect Union we must band together to hold our beloved Constitution safe from all enemies foreign and domestic.
Will you help, will you stand and will you share?
The fight will be huge. The cost will be great. The rewards will be freedom.
We need a State-by-State league joined at the hips to protect the US Constitution. I propose this be the start of The Arizona League.
I’m open for input and or information.
Respond, as you will.
